An alcohol blackout is a form of amnesia caused by excessive alcohol consumption. Drinking too much alcohol degrades hippocampus performance. Increased blood alcohol concentration (BAC) disables the hippocampus’ ability to form new memories.
Alcohol Blackout is not forgetting; it is a brain disruption that causes the brain to stop registering and storing new data. The faster a person drinks, the amount they drink, what they drink and how long they drink can increase the chances of experiencing an alcohol blackout (anterograde amnesia).
Alcoholic Blackout Indications:
- Repeating sentences over and over.
- Person cannot recall talking to you just a moment ago.
- Asks the Question, “Where are we?”
- Limited affect (loss of facial expression).
Alcoholic Blackout Signs:
- Cannot remember where their car is parked.
- Doesn’t know where they are.
- Doesn’t know who they are with.
- Cannot remember what happened the day before.
- Blank spots in memory from the previous day.
